What is the difference between Counseling and Coaching?
The “bicycle analogy”, according to the International Coaching Federation, can help us understand the general differences between counseling and coaching
A counselor is trained to help a person work through barriers and past issues that make it difficult to approach a bicycle, think about bicycles or ride a bicycle. They work with them to become more mentally and emotionally stable and healthy so they are able to get on a bicycle.
A coach is trained to support a mentally and emotionally healthy person in exploring which bicycle to choose, where to get it from, and what kind of cycling trips they’d like to use it for. They support them in planning and implementing future cycling trips.
WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY ABOUT COACHING...
“I found the coaching experience incredibly helpful in shifting my mindset and in challenging my own assumptions about what was possible for my future career goals. It was refreshing to dedicate time to focus on longer term professional development plans, aspirations and ideas - thoughts that sometimes get lost under everyday tasks. The coaching relationship is very special - impartial but supportive. The prompts and questions that helped to structure our conversations have stayed with me, and I can see myself pausing to really question why I might be feeling a certain way in response to a situation."
"I would recommend the opportunity to have a coach to anyone - the format allows for so much flexibility that you can go with a specific situation to resolve, have an end goal in mind but need a path to get there, or simply try to understand how you feel about something that is currently too amorphous to respond to effectively”
